Four Cities, Two Planes the Same Day

By: Anna LightnerDisplaying IMG_5585.JPG

Philipp Grau, more commonly known as PG, is an exchange student here from Germany. Coming to America, he said that the culture here was just like how the movies he’d seen in Germany made it out to be, so he wasn’t really shocked. He really likes the ‘chill’ and relaxed atmosphere here in America, and plans on coming back to study medicine in college and eventually work and live here. PG also appreciates the best that Hollywood can offer. His favorite movies are Bad Teacher, Forrest Gump, and all things Disney. Favorite actor: Adam Sandler. Favorite actress: Jennifer Aniston. Among his many favorite TV shows are How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Walking Dead, Mike and Molly, and King of Queens. His favorite song, Dark Horse, is sang by his favorite singer, Katy Perry.

PG didn’t really know what to expect of Lee High because he’d never heard of it before, but when he walked in the doors, he automatically sensed the welcoming atmosphere. He said everyone was very friendly and welcoming; he thought that it was totally awesome. After spending three months in the school, he still thinks it has the same atmosphere as it did on his first day. He says, “It’s still really awesome. People are still friendly. Teachers are nice, like friends.” His favorite class is chemistry because he says that everyone always helps each other out, Mrs. Davis is a good teacher, and the students don’t laugh at someone when they make a mistake; they work together and joke with each other. His favorite thing about Lee is the amazing school spirit. And his least favorite, well, he couldn’t think of one. When asked what he thought about Lee from an outside perspective, he said that, “It’s really friendly, there’s a lot of teamwork, it’s happy. People here care.” In the spring, he plans to join the tennis team.

As he compared his school in Germany to our school here, he realized how different the schools really were. A regular day for him in Germany is as follows: get up at 6:30, and then walk/bike to school at 7:30. Classes are forty-five minutes long, and they get a twenty-five minute break for breakfast (which they bring) at 10:05, followed by more classes and then the whole school eats lunch at 12. Depending on the day, they either go home at 1:20 or 2:15. Each week is either an A or B week, so one week will have a certain number of classes while another might have an extra class. He said that Lee and his school in Germany were pretty much the same, except they don’t have as many clubs, sports are through outside organizations, and their school gives them breaks during the day to go outside. Also, they walk just about everywhere; their parents don’t really drive them around. When asked which one he liked better, he said he likes both his German school and Lee. If you see PG around, make sure to say hi and introduce yourself!

2. Restaurant Review

On Friday November 14th, the cross country team and I had just finished our meet and we decided to stop somewhere for lunch together, in order to celebrate the end of our season. We stopped at the Applebee’s in Winchester, Virginia. We were greeted with very a very nice hostess, who lead us to our tables. Right as we sat down, our menus were presented to us and our drink orders were taken. Since our group was quite large our waiter went to each of our tables and took our drink and food orders. There were no complaints due to the fact that he was the only waiter and we were in no rush.

At a table with six people we paired up and ordered three different types of appetizers, so we could all share them. Spinach and artichoke dip, mozzarella sticks and boneless wings were ordered for everyone at the table and we were very delicious. The appetizers came within a good period of time to allow some table conversation. Once we were finished with the last appetizer, our food came right away. Each person ordered something different and I ordered the seven ounce sirloin steak cooked to medium rare along with broccoli and french fries. The steak was not cooked to the way I had preferred, but the flavors were all there. The broccoli was cooked nicely and the fries were good. I was unable to eat more than a small portion of the fries due to becoming full already from the three different types of appetizers and the entree itself; however, everything tasted very nicely.

Each person seemed to enjoy their meals and had did not have any complaints. The overall rating is great. The service was excellent, the food very tasty and the atmosphere was friendly and cozy. If anyone would happen to be in Winchester, Applebee’s is the place to go for a nice meal, friendly service, and good atmosphere.

Fall Sports Wrap up

By: Quuraan Harden

Football– Varisty football season is over after a 1st round playoff loss. The Leemen lost 33-29 to East Rock. The Leemen overcame lots of adversity by being down 26-8 at one point and they came back and took the lead in the 4th quarter but gave up a touchdown. Turnovers killed the Leemen in that game.  They finished 6-5 on the season which is a winning season but they know they should have done a lot better.

Competition Cheer– The Completion cheer team had a great season and finished 3rd in state, so congrats to them on a great season.

Girls Cross country– Our girls cross country team had a great season also they finished 60 in the state competition.

Boys Cross Country– Guys cross country did even better by finishing 2nd in the region and 5th in the state competition.

Volleyball– Our girls volleyball team had a rough season let’s just say it’s a rebuilding year for the lee ladies, they lost in the first round of the conference tournament.

National Sports Update

This is the first year for the college football playoff. This has caused a frenzy over which

four teams will qualify for the playoff. TCU, Baylor,Alabama,Mississippi State, and Oregon are

just a few of the teams competing for a playoff birth. Only time will tell which teams will make

  1. The NBA season has brought the excitement of Cleveland’s big three.Lebron who is one of

the best players on the planet is ready to bring a trophy back to his home town. If only Johonny

Manziel could do the same. The Warriors are the Association’s hottest team with the sharp

shooting of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson; they are both in the top ten in scoring. Don’t

go to sleep on the powerhouse that is the San Antonio Spurs. In the NFL, there is no clear cut

favorite for the Super Bowl champ, but Tom Brady and his Patriots are always efficient and a

safe pick to go all the way. The Sheriff in Denver may have something to say about who

makes it out of the AFC.

Okay, so we all know that the two lovebirds, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, are the definition of COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIPS. One week they’d be together and happy, photos would fly through their fans news feeds, and then they’d be broken up another week. Recently after their 500th time of breaking up, more or less, Selena came out with a new hit song called “The Heart Wants What It Wants”. In the beginning of the song Gomez is crying, explaining how hurt she is, and how one stupid thing can change something so perfect and amazing. The opening lyrics of her speaking and crying were:

“I know his heart, and I know what he wouldn’t do to hurt me, but I didn’t realize feeling so confident, feeling so great about myself and then it just be completely shattered by one thing by something so stupid.’But then you make me feel crazy because you make me feel like it’s my fault. I was in pain.”

Gomselena-gomez-heart-wants-what-it-wants-video-3245r2.jpgez has a very strong reaction to this video, it shows a depressive state, and how shes into a bad boy who seems to not be as interested in her as she’d been hoping. So, how exactly is Justin Bieber going to respond to the opening of the video? When the opening lines are “You got me sipping on something, I can’t compare to nothing.” She is pretty much saying “Whatever you do, I am not good enough. I can not amount to it. “

Selenas friends feel her pain as they compare their relationship problems to the main hook of the song:

“The bed’s getting cold and you’re not here..The future that we hold is so unclear..But I’m not alive until you call..And I’ll bet the odds against it all..Save your advice ’cause I won’t hear..You might be right but I don’t care..There’s a million reasons why I should give you up..But the heart wants what it wants”

The heart wants what it wants. After the dramatic video was released and hitting over 27,000,000 views in one week, Selena sits down in an interview with Ryan Seacrest as she explains how emotionally attached she is to Justin, and without explaining in detail what their “Status” is, she explains that they are very close, she loves him dearly, and that she would never want anyth1415295504623_wps_2_rosemary2014_11_06_08h05m.jpging bad to happen to him. No matter how bad she cries out, and screams about justin, lets face it, the heart wants what it wants.

Fans are dying to see if Justin has a response, or even a new hit single to send a message about or even to Selena; But that’s just something the fans must wait for. Its been updated that after all the posting from Selena on Instagram about her new single, Justin unfollows her, maybe due to jealousy of the “bad boy” used in Gomez’s video? Or maybe just guilt from the lyrics that stab the heart? Who knows?!

Rover Philae

By: Alex Deaton

On November 12, 2014, the rover Philae landed on the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. This was a major accomplishment with it having been launched in 2004. It touched down right where it was expected to. It travelled 6.4 billion kilometers or 4 billion miles.

Philae bounced twice before finally coming to rest on the comet; it first bounced hundreds of meters back into space, did a small bounce, and finally landed on the surface.

One of the discoveries of the mission is that the comet’s magnetic field oscillates at 40-50 millihertz.

As of 00:36 UTC November 15, Philae stopped responding. This means that Philae ran out power, but this was not before scientists turned its main solar panel so that it can reactivate in August 2015 when the comet is closer to the sun.

10. Fashion Update

The Half Bun

By: Abbey Kincheloe

All over Lee High you see different trends taking place. While walking through the hallways I noticed cowboy boots, ripped jeans, and high heels. Another thing caught my eye…hair. Hair could be considered a fashion accessory. Something that helps accentuate an outfit, or new fad. You may see boys with short hair, you may see boys with long hair. You may see girls with their hair up, you may see girls with their hair down…or you may see girls with their hair in an in between stage. This “middle stage” has most recently been named the Half Bun. The Half Bun is the best of both worlds. It gives your outfit an interesting look, with a casual feel…without having the “I’m-Bumming-It-And-Wish-It-Was-Vacation” look. The Half Bun works great with short hair, but for you long haired ladies (and fellows), it will work for you too, just make sure you know how to rock it!

Remember, before you decide you want to hate on The Half Bun, make sure you have at least tried it out. According to our statistics (and personal experiences) you won’t regret it!Enjoy these pictures of the half bun in a fancier setting, in a casual setting, on a man, and on ARIANA GRANDE!!!

Mack Cullen

Cullen, a dear friend, a fellow senior, and an opponent on the football field has committed to the University Of  James Madison to play football for the dukes for the next four years as a tight end not as a quarterback (high school position). Cullen who received the offer from JMU in the middle of September did not officially verbally commit until this past weekend on Sunday night. Although, Cullen is apart of one of our opposing teams in the area, it is always nice to see players in the area reach the next level.
